The Advantages of Battery Storage Technology

While solar energy has been booming in recent years, many are often unaware of the battery storage technology supporting it. This technology is growing just as rapidly and without it, solar energy might not be viable.

What is Battery Storage Technology

Question Mark

Battery storage technology, or battery energy technology, are rechargeable battery systems that are charged primarily by solar arrays but can also accept energy from other sources including the energy grid itself.

Unlike traditional batteries, these battery systems can perform advanced tasks that allow for the distribution of the stored energy on the electrical grid. In 2021, two-thirds of solar arrays that are built will be done so alongside battery storage technology.

Here are some of the main advantages battery storage technology offers the world:

3 Battery Storage Technology Advantage

1. Peak Shaving (Saves You Money)

One of the biggest advantages of battery storage technology is peak shaving. Now, unless you work in power distribution or solar technology fields, you probably have no idea what peak shaving is.

To put it as simply as possible, peak shaving is a technique that ensures your business or home will not draw power from the electric grid during peak hours (when it’s most expensive) up to a certain threshold.

As a result, this can significantly lower any electricity bills while using solar technology (yes there is still a bill).

2. Emergency Backup

Unfortunately, the electric grid is not perfect. There are blackouts, and if you don’t get 100% of your energy from solar, you will lose power. However, that’s not the case with battery storage technology.

Instead, these batteries will be able to supply the energy it has stored up to keep your business or home running. How long it lasts depends on the battery size and the charge saved up. However, the main advantage is ensuring momentary outages do not impact you.

They work similarly to an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which I highly recommend using for sensitive electronics like a PC.

3. Reduce Emissions

Battery technology is not just for renewable energy as it can benefit the electric grid as well. And in those scenarios, it can make a huge difference in terms of reducing emissions.

The way it does this is simple. They can store unused energy for later use. The electric grid currently shifts unused energy to where it is needed, and it does a pretty good job at this. But, there is always room for improvement.

As a result, less energy would have to be generated, thus less emissions and air pollution.

Essential For the Energy Transition

In the future years of the energy transition, battery technology will play a key role. Battery technology will make it easier to add renewable energy to the electric grid and drastically improve its effectiveness.

And it’s not just the electric grid that will be able to take advantage of the benefits.

Electric vehicles are also reaping the benefits of advancements in battery technology. The capacity of batteries is improving, thus the cars can go further per charge. The prices are lower, which means the cars are getting cheaper.

Batteries will play a big role in the next decade as our electric grid transitions.
